Pop music has always had the charming ability to convey complex ideas and narratives through means that often bypass the intellect. There is no need for prior reading, context, or chin-stroking pretence—when the song hits, you either feel it or you don’t. Nothing else matters. Twenty-two-year-old Spanish musician Judeline perfectly encapsulates this trait that makes pop so endearing, using the medium as a vehicle to express themes of love, life, death, and the liminal spaces that exist in between.
Her music is often described as “ethereal,” a term that has become such a stock phrase in recent years that we hesitate even to use it now. But in Judeline’s case, no other word so perfectly captures the vibe she exudes. With hushed, auto-tuned vocals, her voice ripples through her tracks, gliding around experimental beats like an angelic or ghostly presence—at times barely perceptible, yet always strong enough to leave a lasting impression.
Judeline’s debut album Bodhira, released at the tail end of last year, saw her collaborate with a plethora of local producers, including Tuiste, Mayo, Rusowsky, Ralphie Choo, and DRUMMIE—some of the most exciting new musicians to emerge from Spain in recent years. With such a range of experimental talent steering its sonic direction, Bodhira unfolds like a kaleidoscopic tapestry of underground electronic music, flamenco, folk, hip-hop, and R&B, proving that Judeline is far more than a two-dimensional pop act.
Below, GATA meets the artist during her visit to Tokyo, capturing her aura through the indelible lens of GATA family member Idan Barazani. In conversation, she reflects on the Catholic symbolism that permeates her work, her Andalusian roots, as well as her love for the Japanese anime Cardcaptor Sakura.

La música pop siempre ha tenido la encantadora capacidad de transmitir ideas y narrativas complejas a través de medios que a menudo esquivan el intelecto. No se necesita lectura previa, contexto ni una actitud pretenciosa de reflexión: cuando una canción te atrapa, simplemente la sientes o no. Nada más importa. La música de Judeline, artista española de 22 años [@judeli.ne], encapsula perfectamente todo lo que hace que el pop sea tan cautivador, utilizando el género como un vehículo para expresar temas de amor, vida, muerte y esos espacios liminales que existen entre ellos.
Su música suele describirse como "etérea", un término que en los últimos años se ha vuelto tan común que dudamos en usarlo. Pero en el caso de Judeline, ninguna otra palabra captura mejor la atmósfera que desprende. Con voces susurradas y autotuneadas, su voz se desliza por sus canciones, fluyendo entre ritmos experimentales como una presencia angelical o fantasmal—a veces apenas perceptible, pero siempre lo suficientemente fuerte como para dejar una impresión duradera.
Su álbum debut Bodhira, lanzado a finales del año pasado, la vio colaborar con una gran variedad de productores locales, incluidos Tuiste, Mayo, Rusowsky, Ralphie Choo y DRUMMIE—algunos de los músicos más emocionantes que han surgido en España en los últimos años. GATA: Hey Judeline, how has 2025 started for you so far?
JUDELINE: Hey! Well, January has definitely felt like an endless month. There have been a lot of changes and experiences that have taught me a lot—it’s been a very full-on start.

GATA: Hey Judeline, qué tal ha empezado el 2025 hasta ahora?
JUDELINE: Hola! pues sin duda enero ha sido un mes eterno, han habido muchos cambios y experiencias que me han servido de aprendizaje, ha sido un arranque muy completo.

GATA: For those who don’t know you yet, who is Judeline, and how would you describe your music in a few words?
JUDELINE: I’d say I blend a lot of genres like pop, trap, R&B, and electronic music in a very personal way. My Andalusian roots are present in the melodies and lyrics, along with elements of nature and spirituality.

GATA: Para quien no te conoce aún, quién es Judeline y cómo describirías tu música en pocas palabras?
JUDELINE: Diria que mezclo muchos géneros como el pop, trap, rnb, y la electrónica de una forma muy personal, mis raíces andaluzas están presentes en las melodías y las letras al igual que los elementos de la naturaleza y la espiritualidad

GATA: We met you in Japan—tell us a bit about your time there. What’s your connection to the country, and what do you love most about it?
JUDELINE: It’s been my dream to go there all my life. Since I was little, I developed a love for anime and manga—besides what I saw on public TV like Doraemon or Doremi, there was someone at the market in my town who sold Cardcaptor Sakura manga really cheap. Later, in my teenage years, thanks to the internet, I was able to fully immerse myself in my favorite anime, and to this day, I feel like I’ve come to understand Japanese culture mostly through anime.

GATA: Te conocimos en Japón, cuéntanos un poco sobre tu paso por allí. Cuál es tu conexión con el país y qué es lo que más te gusta?
JUDELINE: Ha sido mi sueño toda mi vida ir, desde muy pequeña desarrollé el gusto por el anime y el manga, aparte de lo que veía en la tele pública como doraemon o doremi y en el mercadillo de mi pueblo alguien vendía muy baratos unos mangas de sakura card captor, luego en la adolescencia gracias a internet pude adrentrarme más de lleno en mis animes favoritos a día de hoy y creo que conozco la cultura japonesa en mayor parte a través de los animes.

GATA: A lot of your songs touch on love—it seems to be a big inspiration for you. If you had to choose: a lifelong platonic love or many unconditional loves?
JUDELINE: I think many unconditional loves inspire me more. I love seeing people in different situations, witnessing their intimacy, how they fall in love, how they resolve conflicts, how they behave as you get to know them… It’s something I find really fun. Love and how people experience it fascinates me, just as I find it interesting to see how I change every time I fall in love.

GATA: Muchas de tus canciones tocan el tema del amor y parece ser una gran inspiración para ti. Si tuvieras que elegir: un amor platónico para toda la vida o muchos amores incondicionales?
JUDELINE: Creo que muchos amores incondicionales me inspiran más, me encanta ver a personas en distintas situaciones, o ver la intimidad de distintas personas, como se enamoran, como resuelven conflictos, como se comportan a medida que los vas conociendo… es algo que me divierte, las personas en el amor me dan mucha curiosidad, al igual que me da curiosidad como soy yo de distinta cada vez que me enamoro.

GATA: With roots in Andalusia, what’s the most important thing you’d want the world to understand about our incredible region?
JUDELINE: I think we’re a one-of-a-kind people. In a world that moves so fast and is becoming so globalized, our culture remains strong, and we’ll always make space to give it the importance it deserves. Going back to my town feels like breathing the cleanest air again, being around the happiest people, and hearing the music that makes me feel most connected to myself—flamenco. In my opinion, Jerez de la Frontera is where you can truly appreciate this music and the culture that surrounds it. I’m in love with Andalusia, and I’d love to represent my culture in the least clichéd and most respectful way possible.

GATA: Con raíces en Andalucía, qué es lo más importante para ti que el mundo entienda sobre nuestra maravillosa comunidad autónoma?
JUDELINE: Creo que somos un pueblo único en el mundo, y que en un mundo en el que todo va tan rápido y todo se está globalizando tanto nuestra cultura está muy presente y siempre vamos a abrir hueco para darle la importancia que se merece, siento que bajar a mi pueblo es sentir de nuevo el aire más limpio, la gente más alegre, y la música que más conectada conmigo misma me hace sentir, el flamenco, que en mi opinión es en jerez de la frontera donde mejor puede apreciarse esta música y la cultura que le rodea. estoy enamorada de andalucía y me gustaría mucho poder representar mi cultura de la forma menos cliché y respetuosa posible.

GATA: Some of your imagery, songs, and titles have a touch of Catholic symbolism. As an Andalusian, this influence is probably unavoidable, since religiosity is so present there. What role does it play in your life, or how does it continue to inspire you?
JUDELINE: I was lucky to have parents who gave me complete freedom to find my own way of feeling spirituality and faith. My grandmother, for example, was very Catholic, and even though my parents were atheists but spiritual, I went to a Catholic school with a pretty conservative environment. Sometimes it made me feel ashamed, and I pretended to understand Catholicism just to fit in with the other kids. But over time, I developed a general interest in all religions and in how different people experience faith. Even now, Semana Santa processions still make me cry when I see them, but I can’t really say for sure what I believe in and what I don’t.

GATA: Algunas de tus imágenes, canciones y títulos tienen un toque que recuerda a la religión católica. Como andaluza, seguramente esto te haya influenciado, ya que aquí la religiosidad es muy presente. Qué papel juega esto en tu vida o cómo te sigue inspirando?
JUDELINE: Pues he tenido la suerte de tener unos padres que me han dado toda la libertad del mundo de elegir mi forma de sentir la espiritualidad y la fe, es verdad que mi abuela por ejemplo era muy católica, y a pesar de haber nacido con padres ateos pero espirituales, fui a un colegio católico en el que había un ambiente bastante conservador… esto me hizo aveces sentirme avergonzada y fingir entender el catolicismo para encajar entre los niños del colegio, pero creo que con el tiempo desarrollé un interés general por todas las religiones y la forma distinta de cada persona de sentir la fe, los pasos de semana santa me hacen llorar a día de hoy cuando voy a verlos pero no sé bien decir en qué creo y en que no.

GATA: Last year was a huge breakout moment for your career. We know that kind of rise can be stressful. What do you like to do to relax or disconnect? Any sports or hobbies you enjoy?
JUDELINE: I love drawing, honestly. I’m obsessed with the sea—I could live in it, or just lying on the sand at the beach. Also, playing video games has had me hooked since I was a kid.

GATA: El año pasado fue como el boom y el lanzamiento de tu carrera en plena expansión. Entendemos que esto puede generar mucho estrés. Qué te gusta hacer para relajarte o desconectar? Algún deporte o hobby que disfrutes?
JUDELINE: Me gusta mucho dibujar la verdad, me apasiona el mar podría vivir dentro de el, o tumbada en la arena de la playa, también jugar a videojuegos es algo que me tiene enganchada desde niña.

GATA: Your journey has probably had its ups and downs. Was there a particularly difficult moment that became a major learning experience for you?
JUDELINE: I think the hardest time for me was my teenage years. I went through depression from 13 to 16, and when I got out of it, I promised myself that my life was going to be beautiful and that I’d be the most positive singer in the world, haha. I still have my moments, but never like back then. Having been in such a dark place and making it out has given me a lot of tools to navigate life today.

GATA: En tu camino seguramente has tenido altibajos. Hay algún momento en particular que haya sido especialmente difícil y que te haya servido como aprendizaje?
JUDELINE: Creo que la etapa más complicada para mí fue mi adolescencia, pasé por una depresión de los 13 a los 16 años y cuando salí de ahí prometí que mi vida iba a ser bonita y que sería la cantante más positiva del mundo jajajaj, realmente tengo mis momentos pero nunca como estuve en aquellos años, haber estado en un pozo tan oscuro y haber podido salir me da muchas herramientas a día de hoy.

GATA: What’s the craziest or funniest thing that’s happened during one of your shows?
JUDELINE: Madrid shows had quite a few wild moments. One of my dancers tore her knee in the middle of a performance. Another time, a fan threw a Venezuelan flag on stage, and when I went to grab it, I almost fell flat on my face—and with autotune on, that sounded even funnier. The show is very performative and artistic, but there’s always some unexpected, funny moment.

GATA: Cuál ha sido el momento más loco o divertido que te ha pasado durante alguno de tus shows?
JUDELINE: Pues en los shows de madrid hubieron bastantes retos, una bailarina se rajó la rodilla en medio del show, otro día un fan tiro una bandera de venezuela y al ir a agarrarla casi me caigo de boca al suelo y eso con el autotune suena más gracioso aún, el show es muy performatico y artístico pero siempre hay algún momento gracioso.

GATA: Finally, what are your biggest goals for 2025?
JUDELINE: I want to learn to be more responsible and professional. At the end of the day, because of my age, I’m learning to be an adult and a singer at the same time. But most of all, I want to be really happy, laugh a lot, and enjoy my moment and my youth in the best way possible.

GATA: Por último, cuáles son tus mayores metas para 2025?
JUDELINE: Quiero aprender a ser más responsable y profesional, al final por mi edad estoy aprendiendo a ser adulta a la vez que cantante, y sobre todo ser muy feliz, reírme mucho y aprovechar mi momento y mi juventud de la manera más bonita que pueda.

JUDELINE: Not much else, really! I’m dying to go back to Japan—I had such a great time shooting there. I really want to spend a long period there and get to know more about one of the most beautiful cultures I’ve ever experienced. Thanks for the interview!

JUDELINE: Pues no mucho más en realidad, me muero de ganas por volver a japón y me lo pasé genial haciendo las fotos, tengo muchísimas gracias de pasar allí una temporada larga y conocer más de una de las culturas más bonitas que he visto nunca, gracias por la entrevista!
