“REVENGE IS FOR 2”: THE RETURN OF THE HORROR VIDEO GAME ADVERTISEMENT
When it comes to crafting spine-chilling horror, arguably no country comes close to matching the fear-inducing pedigree of Japan. From the harrowing folktale horror of Hideo Nakata’s Ring to the visceral art direction of Konami’s Silent Hill, Japanese media can count itself responsible for countless sleepless nights around the globe. With their latest collection, LA-based streetwear brand Revenge has taken note and tapped into a long-forgotten aspect of Japanese horror culture: the video game advertisement.
Captured through the indelible lens of photographer and director Idan Barazani, alongside creative direction from Liron Eini, the series looks to fabricate an imaginary advertisement that feels like it has been excavated straight out of the year 2000. Moody cold lighting and dense, harsh grain permeate each image to create a vibe that perfectly aligns with the video game-coded graphics of the collection.
Taking place in a 120-year-old house in the mountains outside of Tokyo, the images take heavy inspiration from classic video game titles such as Fatal Frame and Silent Hill, infusing these nostalgic cultural symbols with contemporary street fashion culture; a perfect recipe of fear that could only be concocted in the home of J-horror.
