Cuando hablamos del año 2000, pensamos en la pre-Facebook era, en discos de música que se grababan en mp3. Un tiempo en el que, sin duda, la música navegaba otras vías y Spotify no te recomendaba nuevos artistas. Era el año de The Marshall Matters de Eminem y de Skull & Bones de Cypress Hill. El comienzo del milenio visionaba presencias femeninas en el rap estadounidense increíbles, como Da Brat, Lil Kim o Missy Elliot entre muchas otras.
A 4,000km de distancia, en España, el 2000 era el año de una escena del rap ya consolidada y talentosa, el año de Nach, SFDK, Hablando en Plata y de ‘Lujo Ibérico’ de la Mala Rodríguez, un album que abriría el camino a las voces femeninas del nuevo milenio.
20 años después del lanzamiento de su primer álbum Lujo Ibérico, hablamos con una de las pioneras del rap español María Rodríguez, aka Mala, la llamada ‘madre del hip hop español’.
Viniendo de una familia humilde de un pueblecito de Andalucía, María comenzó improvisando en la calle, y desde entonces no ha parado de componer poesía y romper barreras con sus rimas.
Gracias a su alma de luchadora, logro abrirse paso sin freno en un país dominado por los ideales masculinos, convirtiéndose así en una de las primeras artistas femeninas de Hip-Hop con más éxito en España en el comienzo de los 2000s’.
Ya nos enseño en su día a fusionar el rap con el flamenco y abanderar el sabor Andalusí y gitano de tierras sureñas, y desde entonces no ha parado de experimentar con nuevos sonidos y a colaborar con los mejores artistas como Tego Calderon o Calle 13.
Ahora nos trae su nuevo álbum, bajo el nombre de Mala, donde experimenta con nuevos beats, de Reggaeton a Balada y ritmos frescos, adaptándose a las nuevas generaciones de música, eso sí, manteniendo la pureza con la que conquisto a todo el país unos años atrás.
Feminista y madre, La Mala es un ejemplo a seguir y dos décadas después, viene con más fuerza que nunca.

20 years after the release of her first album Lujo Ibérico, we are able to talk with one of the pioneers of Spanish rap María Rodríguez, aka Mala. Originally from a humble family in a small town in Andalusia, María began improvising and singing on the street, and since then she has not stopped composing poetry.
Thanks to her fighter soul, she managed to break through without restraint in a country dominated by masculine ideals, thus becoming one of the first female hip-hop artists to achieve success in Spain during the 90s.
She already had the idea back in the day, to merge rap with flamenco and since then she has not stopped experimenting with new beats, and collaborating with the best artists in the country. Now she brings us her new album, under the name "Mala", where she merges her style with fresh rhythms; adapting to the new generation of music, but always maintaining a sense of purity and her own personal style which conquered the whole country some years ago.
Feminist and mother, La Mala is a person you need to listen to and follow. Two decades later, she is coming back stronger than ever.
The GATA team sits down with her, to talk about her world and inspirations, don't miss it!

GATA: Mala, eres una de las mujeres pioneras del rap en España, ganaste tu primer disco de oro super jovencita. Cómo fue entonces, en un mundo dominado por los ideales masculinos que una mujer tuviera tanto impacto?
MALA: No sé cómo paso pero yo nunca me creí menos que nadie, supongo que tuve mucha suerte.

GATA: Mala, you are one of the original women of rap in Spain, a true pioneer. You won your first Golden Record when you were still super young. How was it then as a woman, in a world dominated by masculine ideals, to have such a big impact in the business?
MALA: I don't know how it happened, but I never thought I was less than anyone else, I guess that was one of the reasons and I think I was also very lucky.

GATA: Comparado con entonces, dirías que las cosas han cambiado positivamente para las artistas femeninas? En qué cosas crees que habría que trabajar aun?
MALA: Creo que existe una linda conversación entre nosotras que antes no había, ahora no es raro llamarte feminista... debemos seguir dialogando y trabajando por la igualdad y el respeto!
Ahora el pop tiene tintes feministas y eso es un gran avance

GATA: If you compare now to back in the times when you started singing, have things changed positively towards female artists? What things do you think should still change?
MALA: I think this is a beautiful conversation between us female artists that wasn’t there before. For example now, it’s not strange to call yourself a feminist. We must continue having a dialogue and working for equality and respect!
Now pop has feminist overtones and that is a great advance.

GATA: Volvamos por un momento a los años 90, años clave para el rap en España. Junto a ti, conocimos a artistas como Violadores del Verso, Hablando en Plata, Solo los Solo, Tote... Crees que existe aún en España, un movimiento de rap tan fuerte como el que había entonces?
MALA: Creo que la escena se ha diversificado mucho y las nuevas generaciones han traído otros sonidos y otros colores al panorama, a mí me hacía falta un poco de eso también.

GATA: Let's go back to the 90s for a moment, key years for rap in Spain. We met iconic Rap artists like Violadores del Verso, Hablando en Plata, Solo Los Solo, Tote and yourself. Do you think there is still a strong rap movement in Spain, compared to the one back then?
MALA: I think the scene has diversified a lot and new generations have brought other sounds, rhythms and other colours to the scene. It’s very positive. I needed a bit of that too.

GATA: Cómo crees que ha cambiado el rap en España con las nuevas generaciones?
MALA: Hubo un tiempo que estuvo muy estancada la cosa, pero desde 2013 siento que todo ha brotado y hay muchos artistas retorciéndolo, me gusta mucho cuando pasa eso. No menosprecio lo que se hacía antes pero me gusta que la cosa siga mutando!!!!

GATA: How do you think rap has changed in Spain within the younger generations?
MALA: There was a time when things were very stagnant but since 2013, I feel that everything has sprung up and many artists are twisting it; I like it when that happens. I do not despise what was done before but I like that things continue to change!!!!

GATA: Vivimos en la era digital, la información se comparte de una manera muy rápida y podemos exponer nuestro trabajo de una manera más fácil. Crees que las redes sociales han sido un avance en el mundo de la música?
O por el contrario, existe ahora más competencia?
MALA: Las redes sociales me encantan, disfruto compartiendo con gente lo que hago… Estoy muy cerca de mis fans y eso me encanta. Hoy día, funcionarán mejor los productos con mejor marketing pero también pienso que has de tener un gran fan-base y eso se consigue desde abajo...No se que decir la verdad…

GATA: We live in the digital age, information is being shared very fast and we can expose our work more easily. Do you think that social networks have been a positive in the music world?
MALA: I love social networks, I enjoy sharing what I do with people...I feel very close to my fans and I love that. Nowadays, products will work better if you have good marketing, but I also think that to get a good fan base you need to achieve that from the very bottom.

GATA: Cómo fue para ti abrirte paso en el mundo del rap en la era pre-digital?
MALA: Recuerdo que cuando fiche con la discográfica ya no se vendían discos y también recuerdo cuando subimos el vídeo de por la noche YouTube y entonces fue un éxito...
Creo que no acerté nunca en la franja espacio temporal, jeje

GATA: How was it for you, becoming popular in the pre-digital age?
MALA: I remember when I signed with the record company, they were no longer selling records, and then I remember when we uploaded the YouTube video for Por la Noche, it was a total success.
I never really understand the space-time strip, hehe…

GATA: Crees que tu trayectoria habría cambiado si hubieras tenido acceso a las redes sociales como tienes ahora?
MALA: Bueno no sé la verdad! Creo que hay muchas posibilidades diferentes y para saber eso habría que hacer algunos cálculos matemáticos.

GATA: Do you think your future would have been different, if you had access to social networks like you do now?
MALA: I don't really know! I think there are many different possibilities, but probably we would have to do some mathematical calculations.

GATA: Siempre te hemos admirado por tu pureza y sinceridad, y sabemos que es una de las cosas que más aprecias en otros artistas. Hay algún artista actual que te inspire especialmente por su pureza y alma?
MALA: Me gustan muchos, creo en el ser humano, pienso que estamos aquí para aprender y que todos cometemos fallos en algún momento...
Hay demasiados apegos que refinar pero si he de decidirme por uno nombraría a Cecilio G.

GATA: We have always admired you for your purity and sincerity, and we know this is one of the things you appreciate the most in other artists. Is there an artist currently that inspires you in particular?
MALA: I like them all, I believe in human beings. I think that we are here to learn and that we all make mistakes at some point...There are too many attachments to refine it but if I had to decide on one, I would say Cecilio G.

GATA: Si pudieras colaborar con un artista no musical, vivo o no, de cualquier lugar del mundo, quién sería y por qué?
MALA: Me gusta mucho la arquitectura, la pintura... no sé, simplemente disfruto cuando alguien comparte algo interesante conmigo y podemos aportarnos cosas.

GATA: If you could collaborate with a non-musical artist, alive or dead, from anywhere in the world, who would this person be and why?
MALA: I really like architecture, painting ...I don't know, I just enjoy when someone shares something interesting with me and we can contribute.
