The Freedom. A Conversation with Javier de la Blanca

When you bump into a social media account like Javier de la Blanca´s one, you´ll find something beyond ordinary, an extraordinary aesthetic portrayed by a super charismatic persona.

While browsing his feed he takes you with him into his world, a magical mind space where there are no fashion rules no more.

You can feel it, it’s pure freedom and self-expression with no boundaries.

He is the guy you want to know of. An eccentric and provocative monster, that is always waving the genderless flag.

Even John Galliano says it, the controversial Maison Margiela´s Creative Director has confessed being obsessed with him, and has used him as a big inspiration for the brand´s collections in 2019. As he said, ¨The freedom! The shapes he´s throwing!¨, it´s quite something, we can all agree.

Javier has recently moved to Berlin, in order to continue developing all his different passions, because he is not only a creative model, but also hugely influences with his social media accounts, and does amazing Art direction for different projects, using his vision to style some of them.

He is the actual definition of a person that thinks out of the box and constantly proves that beauty is relative, and keeps reimagining it.

Playing with non-aesthetic referents, embracing the ugly, the grotesque, distortion and deformity, this artist creates beautiful things with a single purpose: celebrate self-expression.

You either love him or hate him, two extremes that make him feel alive, as he often says.

And Gata Team knows exactly which extreme is at, Pure love for you, Javier <3

Gata: Can you tell us a little bit about you and your childhood? What kind of teenager you were?

Javier: I was born in Madrid and raised in a suburb. From the age of 5 until the age of 18, I was in a nuns' school. The last two years of high school I knew I didn't have anything to do with those circles, so I quickly started studying fashion design and meeting people who inspired me and helped me create my own freedom. I was a teenager with many friends, but still a baby in terms of freedom and creativity.

Gata: I can imagine you were already standing out in some way, was it like that? and if so, what made you different of the rest?

Honestly, I was just seen because since I was 16 I was openly gay and dressed with ‘’discreet creepers’’, but my real evolution started when I finished High School.

I moved to Berlin because I need changes and I need to evolve my creativity

Gata: Which has been your biggest achievement as an artist so far?

My two favorites are when my work was chosen to be part of the dictionary on women of the 21st century and when I met John Galliano and Maison Margiela team as an inspiration for their SS19.

Gata: What is the trend, that we should never wear in Spain this season?

Spanish flag

Be the body you wanna be, whenever you wanna be

Gata: Barcelona is the 6th fashion capital and Madrid the 10th, would you agree?

I would say the opposite, I love Barcelona but I think exactly at this moment Madrid is the focus for fashion parties and creative people in the fashion industry. But soon this will change and Barcelona will be (again) before Madrid.

Gata: We saw you moved to Berlin, why Berlin? Are you starting something new? Something that we should be prepared for?

Yes, I got tired of Madrid. I´ve been living there for 24 years and I have seen and known everything and everyone I had to. I’m done in Madrid at this moment. I’m moving to Berlin because it’s another creative capital where many magazines and people can bring me different visions in art and fashion. I’m moving because I need changes and I need to evolve my creativity.

Gata: You are such a Fashion icon, would you dare to create your own clothes collection?

I love the fashion industry and I’m trying to play as many roles as I can (casting direction, social media content, image advisor..) so for now, creating my own collection is not in my plans yet, but in the future, who knows?

Gata: If you would appear in a movie, which one would it be?

Kill Bill Vol.1

Gata: Can you tell us 3 of your favorite movies?

La ley del deseo , Kill Bill vol. 1 y vol. 2 & Ninphomaniac vol. 2

Gata: Who is or was your biggest inspiration?

I never had one big inspiration, I’ve been inspired by plenty of humans and every day I know more and more. My saying is: there are never enough inspirations.

Gata: We love the message you gave the world through the Maison Margiela “Mutiny” campaign: “Be the body you wanna be, whenever you wanna be”.

I hope you know, that you are helping a lot of people to dare themselves and that you are already an inspiration for some Japanese kids making big movements in Tokyo, we can't wait for you to visit us in Tokyo!

Thank you for your time!
