BEYOND THE BARRE by DEAD SERIOUS NYC

 

Challenging clichés associated with classical ballet, new movement direction company, Dead Serious NYC, collaborated with Brooklyn-based latex brand Tableaux Vivants and American Ballet Theatre dancer Hannah Marshall to showcase ballet in an alternative light. Photographed by Julia Khoroshilov at TV Eye’s discotheque, these photos merge dance, fashion, and music to create a dream-like spectacle.

ABOUT THE TEAM:

Dead Serious NYC:

Choreographing and directing movement using the refined lines and drama of classical ballet, Dead Serious NYC is a movement direction company founded by professional ballet dancers Alicia Fotino and Isabelle Seiler. They produced Beyond the Barre as their debut project.

Co-Founders:

Alicia Fotino graduated from the John Cranko Schule in Stuttgart, Germany. She has worked with The Stuttgart Ballet and Les Grands Ballet Canadiens de Montréal.

Isabelle Seiler trained at the JKO School of American Ballet Theatre and graduated from Canada’s National Ballet School. She has worked with Les Grands Ballet Canadiens de Montréal, Tivoli Ballet Theatre and Dresden Semperoper Ballet.

Tableaux Vivants:

Founded in May of 2009, Tableaux Vivants has become one of the most prominent latex fashion houses of its time. Tableaux Vivants has surpassed its expectations to influence pop culture and high fashion with a distinct portrayal of the character. Not only to be sexy, but powerful, seductive, and above all else, beautiful.  

Under the creative vision of Founder and Designer Sonia Agostino, the brand has built a solid foundation to continue creating high-end luxury latex clothing that will influence and inspire style for seasons to come.

TV Eye:

With notable owners from the New York music scene, TV Eye is one of NYC’s latest and greatest music venues/bars located in Ridgewood, Queens. Among them are Caleb Braaten, who also owns Sacred Bones Records; Jonathan Toubin, legendary DJ and party-thrower; and Jasper McGandy of the Lower East Side’s Home Sweet Home (and member of bands Cult of Youth, Anasazi and The Hunt).

Julia Khoroshilov:

Julia Khoroshilov is a photographer based in New York. Having trained her eye through her experience working in film and dance, her photography focuses on revealing beauty in the unconventional. From time spent touring on the road with musicians, behind the scenes on campaigns and productions, it was there that Julia's passion for capturing the intimate in-between moments developed and has translated to her work. Her clients include: Absolut Vodka, GQ, Rolling Stone, VICE, and more.

Hannah Marshall:

Hannah Marshall dances with American Ballet Theatre as a senior Corps de Ballet member.
