WITCH OF ENVY - An Editorial

“Witch of Envy” is the first editorial of a series inspired by the witches in the "Re: zero kara hajimeru Isekai seikatsu” [Re:ゼロから始める異世界生活] anime.

The Witch of Envy!!! The worst of the worst. Long ago, she devoured all the other witches who bore the names of the deadly sins and drained half of the world dry. The story goes that she was starved for love.

“I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you... I love you.

I...love you. Because you...gave me light. Because you took my hand, and you taught me about the world outside. Because... when I trembled on lonely nights, you never stopped holding my hand. Because when I felt lonely, you kissed me and said that I wasn't alone. You gave me so many things... That's why I love you. Because you... you gave me everything.”

Growing up reading mangas, I fell in love with so many female characters, some of which were sadly overly objectified, some served as mere ‘fan service’, whereas others would be extremely powerful, independent and knowledgeful while living in a fictional fantasy world where patriarchy isn’t a thing.

The Witch of Envy is the first work of an ongoing series depicting manga heroines (or ‘anti-heroines’). It is inspired by Re:zero - starting life in another world, where a witch so powerful and so greedy for love drained half of the world dry because of an unrequited love.
