Martir is an in-house editorial produced by the GATA Magazine team and a group of young talents from Tokyo, featuring a collaboration of different brands from Tokyo and garments from fashion students from Bunka University.

The vision behind the series comes from editor-in-chief and creative director Marta Espinosa and touches upon her memories and childhood experiences growing up in Spain and the symbolism behind the Catholic religion.

‘‘The Catholic religion and all the symbols surrounding it have always held a deep meaning for me, since I grew up in an environment where God was everything to us. Whether we believed in it or not, the girls' school I went to forced us to visit church, pray every morning and even confess our sins regularly.

The melody of the organ in the liturgy became something like an obligatory soundtrack that has marked me forever. After a few years, I decided to go my own way and no longer practice or follow Christianity, but all those symbols have kept me forever. From the massive wooden doors of the church's entrance, to the altar, the stained glass windows, the statues of Jesus and Maria and the liturgical chants; these things are all buried in my subconscious.

There is something that has remained in me that has become a kind of fetish. The power of symbols, colours, and music resonate in my head whenever I enter a church. Saint or Sinner, do good or do evil, turn the other cheek; we have always been subdued and judged by our actions. The line between being a good person or a wrong person was a very fine one.

MARTIR is an editorial about the journey of a soul that transcends from pure belief to complete apostasy or renouncing of faith.”
