Silver and the Sky: A GATA Editorial

Photographer Madeleine Ray captures the spirit of Japanese contemporary author, Banana Yoshimoto to create a dreamy editorial woven with femininity and beauty

In between the realms of daydreams and reality, this sweetly nostalgic fashion story stars model Myu, as she floats through the city environments of Tokyo. Playing with retro aesthetics, soft colour palettes, and ghostly visuals, Silver and the Sky is a surreal clash of harsh city skylines and femininity.

Inspired by the writings of Banana Yoshimoto — a Japanese author who uses magical realism and often writes about girlhood and coming of age in contemporary Japan — Silver and the Sky is a whimsical tale of both melancholy and hope.

In particular this series was inspired by Yoshimoto’s “Asleep”, a collection of short stories from the late 80s revolving around dreams and nighttime. The Japanese title “Shirakawa Yofune” (白河夜船) evokes a feeling of being fast asleep and completely oblivious to what is happening around you.
