SEX: THE MONSTER WITHIN
GATA meets Yuho Kamo and Aya Kuraoka, the founders of SEX – a Japanese fashion brand. SEX NIGHT VISION explores the beauty of fear, the monsters born from trauma, and the art of reconstruction. A conversation about darkness, alien identities, the human body, and transforming the uncomfortable into something extraordinary.
GATA: Who are you?
SEX: My name is YUHO KAMO. I work together with AYA KURAOKA.
GATA: How did the two of you start creating together?
SEX: We started in London.
GATA: What does your face hide from?
SEX: My face hides a past where I was a mean person and a bully.
GATA: What is SEX for you?
SEX: It is a form of self-expression and the ultimate ideal space.
GATA: When did you started the brand?
SEX: I was making wigs for a photoshoot, but halfway through, I started to feel that it was kind of ridiculous. I felt uncomfortable with the idea of them being consumed, so I started printing photos of the wigs onto clothes and selling them instead. That way, people could see my wigs up close.
GATA: What’s the weirdest thing you own?
SEX: I can’t comment on that because it would be a crime lol.
GATA: Yuho, what was your first encounter with H.R. Giger?
SEX: I only discovered him really recently. When I was living in London, I saw a friend making work that looked like Giger’s. I was making wigs inspired by it, but at the time, I didn’t even know Giger existed.
GATA: What lives inside darkness?
SEX: Trauma and fear live in darkness. If you face them without being afraid, you might find some hints for how to live your life.
GATA: What is fear to you?
SEX: Fear is something that captivates me, but also something I want to avoid.
GATA: Why do aliens feel familiar?
SEX: I encounter it within myself whenever I feel fear.
GATA: If you could travel in time, will you go past or future? When and why?
SEX: Either is fine. I like imagining the past and the future.
GATA: What’s your favorite monster? It can be from mythology, film, games… or one you’ve invented in your head.
SEX: I like dark heroes. Simply because they look cool, and because I feel like they resemble my own existence.
GATA: Who is your monster friend?
SEX: The Xenomorph from Alien.
GATA: If you had to build your own spaceship, what would be inside?
SEX: I would take Kanye West with me, and the two of us would travel together.
GATA: Is making art closer to surgery or to dreaming?
SEX: It’s closer to surgery. Remaking is the core of our brand. First, we look at the garment and find its flaws. Then we cut it, take it apart, reshape it into what we consider the ideal form, and connect it back together.
GATA: What’s something you’re obsessed with that has absolutely nothing to do with your work?
SEX: I’ve been obsessed with the human body—body lines, skeletal structure, even the structure of individual bones.
GATA: If you could tattoo one memory onto your body forever, what would it be?
SEX: I would choose the monster created by trauma.
GATA: What is the future of SEX?
SEX: We will definitely become an indispensable presence in the global fashion scene. Our mission is to bring Japan’s underground culture to the world and have it recognized and appreciated. To do that, we first need to become top artists on the global stage ourselves.
