A Conversation with KHADYAK Art and resilience 5.0
GATA Magazine recently talked with multifaceted artist Khadyak. A model for designers like Rick Owens, dancer for ASAP Rocky and Metronomy, songwriter, choreographer and singer, Khadyak is a creative beast, a creator 5.0 that personifies a wave of the new generation that refuses to be labelled and boxed in.
Born and raised in Paris to Senegalese parents, Khadyak has released her first ever EP this year, Rise & Walk, an album full of vibrant sounds; a fresh blend of afro-beats, hip hop and electronic music that put a spotlight on the French underground scene. A hybrid cosmos accompanied with powerful lyrics where she introduces herself to the world and takes us through her living experiences, her flaws and feats and all that she has learned from it.
A truly inspiring artist with a powerful message that the world needs to listen to.
For the people who don’t know you yet, who is Khadyak?
I am a French artist of African descent. I am a singer/songwriter, choreographer/dancer, model and creative director. An activist and a loving human being.
Your very personal sound is hard to fit into a specific genre. How would you describe your music?
I released an Ep of club music which I mixed with electronic music, like Dance, Gqom, UK garage and Hip hop.
What would you say are your main influences or inspirations to create?
My inspiration comes from a need to speak and tell my truth, every song is a personal story. The aim is to help people to keep the will of a fulfilled existence/life.
Singer, songwriter, creative director, dancer, model… You are very immersed in the creative world at many levels, is there any field you would like to dive in the future?
I did my first step of acting in a M/V this year, I would love to improve my skill as an actor. And also direction is something I wanna dive in later.
Most of your lyrics are an expression of empowerment and resilience. Art expression and social responsibility, do you contemplate one without the other in the time we are living?
For me the purpose to be an artist is to reflect the time we live in. I want to help people who are listening my music to give them power back and not to give up. And its important also to say the truth at least my truth. So yes both are going together.
How have you been dealing with the quarantine? Any new project coming?
I have learned so much about myself during this time. I took the time to think about everything and everyone around me.
I think it was the more calm, magical and best time of my life. I wrote a song about it, we are facing a new dimension. I'm working on my next project.
Can you recommend to GATA any movie that has had a great impact on your persona?
My answer is cheasy but fuck it i Love Life of Pi. I love the character who is alone but resourceful,I love his faith in life, I love how he does not give up on hardship and circumstance.
