For more than three decades Japanese manga artist Usumaru Furuya has scoured the darkest crevices of the human psyche in search of substance for his stories. From the grotesque absurdity of his debut series Palepoli to the collective madness of Lychee Light Club, his worlds are populated by characters caught between obsession, fantasy and reality. GATA had the chance to talk to the artist about his thoughts on beauty, obsession and the sometimes disturbing impulses that make us human.
